George Hotz, the first to develop an unlock for the iPhone 3GS has released an updated unlock for the device.

The unlocking method which uses a similar, unpatched exploit found in the iPhone 3G has been streamlined. The new App called Purpelra1n, makes the unlocking process much easier and fixes previous issues with Purplesn0w.

Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails? You need purplesn0w, the geohot 3GS unlock solution. Now I know you here a lot about different colors of sn0w, but I’m here to tell you why purplesn0w is the best. First off, what is purplesn0w? It’s a soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock.

However, there are some caveats such as the lack of support for “hacktivation” and some minor improvements are coming soon to the App. Your iPhone 3GS must be already Jailbroken using either QuickPwn, Redsn0w or Purplera1n.

  • Any iPhone 3GS users who are looking to easily share a video over Twitter should look no further than TwitVid. The app, which was recently released does one thing, and does one thing well — it allows iPhone 3GS users to share a video on Twitter.

The videos can be one that you have already recorded and saved on your iPhone or a new video that you have yet to record.

Of course, due to the video functionality, this app requires users to be on an iPhone 3GS as well as running OS 3.0. Best of all, the app, which is currently available, is free of charge.
Additionally, TwitVid can also be used directly from the web at TwitVid.com. The main difference (aside from not being an iPhone app) is that users of the website can also share the video to Facebook, MySpace and YouTube at the same time.

  • Since the release of the iPhone 3GS last month, there has been a noticeable increase in the amount of complaints rushing in to Apple regarding the lack of improvement on battery life, sms vulnerability and the iPhone overheating amongst other issues. It seems Apple aren’t in a hurry to respond to the consumer uproar and are keeping it all on the hush.

    unresponsive

Apple have an infamous tendency to keep quiet about it’s technology and sharing details with analysts which has a knock on effect when complaints come rolling in. Gartner Analyst Ken Dulaney says “Apple needs to get better at this so that buyers can understand what the limitations are upfront. This is why Apple and the enterprise have a somewhat rocky relationship.”

One of the biggest hype-ups for the 3GS other than the added video functionality is that it boasts a 30% increase on battery life. Well…supposedly. Consumers are almost unanimously agreeing that the battery life has only increased marginally if anything from that of the 3G. There is speculation that it’s due to the software failing to efficiently manage the power of the device – things such as the constant buzzing of interference when near a PC, push-notification and alerts-when-apps aren’t running all contribute to the draining of your battery life. If such speculation is true, you won’t be seeing an increase until the next software release.

Apple responded with a rather unhelpful statement to the LA Times: “Battery life is highly dependent on usage-so if you don’t change your usage pattern from the old iPhone 3G, then performance shouldn’t change either.” Analysts say this is an undervalued issue and that the batteries could be more dangerous than the simple issue of low life as they have no idea why it’s happening, just do’s and dont’s and some speculation circling the communities.

  • In our previous articles, we have covered the specifications of  Apple’s new iPhone 3GS and it was no secret that Apple’s new iPhone 3GS is a faster version of iPhone 3G.

The speed and performance of iPhone 3GS were attributed to faster CPU, more RAM, improved graphics etc. But a recent study carried out by iPhone app developer, Tap Tap Tap reveals that the increased RAM in iPhone 3GS was probably not given the importance it deserved.

The study conducted and published on their blog reveals that the 256 MB RAM in iPhone 3GS is one of the biggest factors behind the overall improved performance of Apple’s new iPhone.

Here is an overview of the different components found in iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

    Central processing Unit (CPU)
    iPhone 3G: ARM 11, 412 MHz
iPhone 3GS: ARM Cortex, 600 MHz

    Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)
    iPhone 3G: PowerVR MBX Lite
    iPhone 3GS: PowerVR SGX

    Random Access Memory (RAM)
    iPhone 3G: 128 MB
    iPhone 3GS: 256 MB

It is noticeable that in comparison to all the above mentioned improvements, the RAM has increased by double. The iPhone app developer has observed that this actually translates into 4X to 10X more available memory in comparison to that of the iPhone 3G.

    Quote:

The older iPhone models have been often considered underpowered when it comes to RAM, so even though the RAM amount is technically doubled, in actual use, you’ll often be working with 4x to 10x the amount of free RAM. And that’s one major aspect that’s contributing to the overall speedier feel of the 3GS.

This conclusion was drawn after folks at Tap Tap Tap carried out the following tests:

    Standard Conditions:

    1. Both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were running an app named ‘Memory Status’. This app displays the usage of RAM on the iPhone.

    2. Both the iPhones are tested at two stages, once during the start up and once after the iPhones have been used for a few minutes.

    3. Both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS were running the following applications after the startup test is done:

    MobileMail (Mail)
    MobileMusicPlayer (iPod)
    MobilePhone (Phone)
    BTServer (Bluetooth server)
    SpringBoard (manages your home screen)
Accessoryd (controls accessories connected through the dock connector)
    Aosnotifyd (controls MobileMe syncing)
    Mediaserverd (controls audio mixing)
The Memory Status App that is used for this study consists of the following memory states:

Wired and Active indicate the memory that is in use.
Inactive and Free indicate the memory that is currently available on the iPhone.
Stage 1: iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS during startup

You will notice that the iPhone 3GS has about 156 MB of memory available during startup. If you look at the available memory on iPhone 3G during startup, it is just under 40 MB.

This means that the iPhone 3GS gives the users 4x the memory in comparison to iPhone 3G.

Stage 2: iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G after use (after startup)

With a list of iPhone applications being used on both the iPhones, the iPhone 3GS comes out as a clear winner. Because of the repeated usage of the listed applications, the available RAM of iPhone 3GS has dropped down to about 122 MB. The Safari browser was still running on iPhone 3GS when this drop was noticed.

iPhone-3GS-3G-RAM-2Now, if you look at available memory in case of iPhone 3G then you will notice that it has actually reduced to a meager 13 MB.

This shows that the iPhone 3GS gives the users almost 10X the memory in comparison to iPhone 3G.

The speed of iPhone 3GS is attributed to other factors as well but the clear comparison of available memory in both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G goes to show the significant impact that increased RAM has made in Apple’s latest iPhone.

  • It seems there may be a line being drawn between the Dev Team and Geohot when it comes to working together to bring what is best for the end user as a whole. While some may argue that them working together is for the best, I would argue that competition between the two may end up bringing the end user slightly better tools.

    thumb.php (2)

Of course, my opinion is just that — my opinion. However with that, Geohot has recently released his own solution for unlocking the iPhone 3GS which has been dubbed purplesn0w. And yes that means we have yet another strange name to remember when it comes to iPhone hacking tools.

Anyway, purplesn0w is the “geohot 3GS unlock solution” and is noted as being able to help prevent you from worrying about “Wifi fails? Battery fails? Unlock fails?” after you unlock.
    Basically, what purplesn0w will do is unlock your iPhone 3GS after you have already jailbroken it using purplera1n. According to Geohot, purplesn0w is;
“A soft unlock for your 3GS that I’d actually use day to day. It’s not a daemon that takes any resources, and it doesn’t add a task to your baseband. It’s very close to a true unlock. All it does is patch three files, CommCenter, lockdownd, and your wildcard activation plist(which you need, activate w at&t sim first, no hacktivation support yet). That’s it, no other files are installed.”

As always it is suggested that you back up your iPhone before beginning, but otherwise here are the steps you need to follow in order to use purplesn0w. Keep in mind, this is also assuming that your iPhone 3GS is already jailbroken.

Be sure to have legit activated 3GS
    Disable 3G if you don’t have it(like T-Mobile).
    Add apt.geohot.com to Cydia
    Install com.geohot.purplesn0w
Watch for success output in Cydia
Reboot, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone

  • You can save $20 on the $99 8GB iPhone 3G if you’re willing to forego factory freshness—refurbed models are $79 with free shipping from AT&T.

Refurbished 3G 8GB models now available for $79 at AT&T

They don’t have refurbed data plans for discount, do they; that’s what we really need.

It seems the discount on previous models of the iPhone is on, and AT&T is looking to clear out all of the previous incarnation of the iPhone from their inventories. This is good for the consumer, but might it also lead to a flood of requests on AT&T’s already strained network from new customers, who previously couldn’t afford the phone?

Hopefully, AT&T is getting their network prepared, and we won’t see a huge slowdown for existing customers.

The site doesn’t say whether this is a temporary sale or not (it probably is permanent, more than likely), but those that don’t think the new 3GS is all that should go check this out ASAP.

  • German GPS firm Navigon has begun branching out into North America with its release of MobileNavigator North America Lite, available for free.

    northamericalite

Readers should note that the free lite version does NOT offer the active route guidance most users are looking for in a GPS mapping application, although it can display a user’s position on its map and locate nearby points of interest. Full turn-by-turn functionality will be available in a future paid version.

    Navigon released the full

version of MobileNavigator Europe at an introductory price of $94.99 in late June, but the application is currently priced at $139.99. Navigon is one of the larger players bringing turn-by-turn GPS solutions to the iPhone, with AT&T opting for the same subscription service used on other platforms and TomTom embracing a forthcoming hardware/software combination solution also competing for users’ attention.

It seems GPS companies love the iPhone suddenly, and plan to embrace the platform in many future software releases.

One of the more overlooked features of the new iPhone 3.0 is support for a new open standard for live video streaming over HTTP, which promises to open up standards-based video broadcasting to a wide audience while giving mobile users an optimized picture as they roam between WiFi and mobile networks.

At the March unveiling of iPhone 3.0, Apple only dropped a subtle hint about new streaming video features in the new operating system (literally limited to writing “streaming video” on the slide of other features, below), leaving out any details about how it would work and not even mentioning the feature in any detail in the presentation.

The technology behind HTTP Live Streaming leaked into public knowledge in May when Apple submitted it to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as a draft standard on track to become an RFC (or Request For Comments, the memorandum used by the Internet Society

to define how technologies work in order to foster cooperation and compatibility between the vendors implementing them).

Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming proposed draft looks a lot like a method Microsoft began selling last year, called Smooth Streaming. The difference is that Apple’s proposed IETF standard can use anybody’s encoder and broadcast server, and will work with any client software designed to receive the stream. In contrast, Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming is of course designed to exclusively use Microsoft Expression Encoder, Microsoft Internet Information Server with a Smooth Streaming extension, and requires Microsoft’s Silverlight 2 on the client.

Essentially, Apple wants a standard for streaming video that anyone can use so that it can continue selling hardware without being either shut out of the market by proprietary software, or held captive by it; Microsoft, as a software vendor, wants to create another captive market where it has the power to shut out competitors at its whim.

Fortune reports that Apple retail store stocks of the 16 GB white iPhone 3GS model have fallen precipitously low early this week. At present, only 10% of Apple’s over 200 retail stores have the model currently in stock.

whiteiphoneif Apple just isn’t making enough of them.

Most Apple retail stores currently have both the black and white 32 GB models available, while the black 16 GB is available in only about 35-40% of stores.

In late June, Apple posted an online availability tracker for the new iPhone 3GS, updated hourly with stock levels at each of its retail stores. Supplies of many models tightened early last week, but rebounded later in the week, and we’re expecting the same here. Early next week things should look up.
