Watching live TV on your phone is something that everyone does in Japan, unlike America, so naturally they want to be able to do it on their iPhones. This USB antenna lets them do just that.

tvplayer

The SEG Clip works by plugging into your laptop’s USB port and then broadcasting TV to your iPhone via WiFi. Simple enough! I guess I wish we could use this here in the States, but I can’t say I’m too broken up about it. The ability to load your iPhone up with recorded TV and movies seems far more convenient (not to mention probably better quality).

Can I ask too: if you need a laptop to use it, it loses some of its point, if we’re allowed to say so. Why not just watch that TV on your bigger screened laptop to begin with?

It’s fair to say that eventually some company in the states will run with an idea like this, due to the USA’s love of television as a culture. For now, YouTube and various other sources keeps us busy enough as it is.

  • A new report predicts that demand for NAND flash memory in cell phones will more than triple by 2013, with a majority of that need being driven by Apple and its iPhone.

    flash memory

In all, sales of solid state memory in phones are predicted to have a nearly sixfold increase in the span from 2008 to 2013, with nearly $1 billion in revenue from flash memory sales by the end of that span.

The new report from iSuppli credits Apple for the growth in popularity of flash memory in smartphones. In 2008, NAND flash generated $166.5 million in revenue, and in 2009 it is projected to bring in $284.3 million.

“Soaring sales of smart phones, combined with the increasing density

of NAND flash in each handset, is causing sales of the memory in this area to boom,” said Michael Yang, senior analyst for mobile and emerging memories at iSuppli. “NAND flash makers can thank Apple Inc. for starting this trend, with its iPhone models injecting new life into the memory market. However, with the introduction of the a new generation of ‘iPhone killers,’ multiple smart-phone makers now are helping to drive NAND demand.”

The iPhone maker is predicted to continue using up much of the solid state memory supply with its expansion into China. The country of over 1 billion is predicted to buy millions of phones from Apple. It is expected that the phone’s availability will be announced by February 2010.

  • Apple and AT&T in hot water with FCC

Many have said that the process Apple uses to approve and disapprove apps for its App Store seems arbitrary. When Apple denies apps developers often get nothing more than a cryptic explanation of why the app was denied.

    iphone-3gs

The latest app to get the denial treatment from Apple was the Google voice app. InformationWeek reports that the FCC sent letters Friday to both Apple and AT&T seeking more information on how apps are approved and disapproved. AT&T says it has no bearing over the approval of apps on the App Store. Apple has said that it disapproves apps that duplicate functionality already available on the device like browsers and music player apps. You would think if Microsoft can’t exclude browsers from its computers that the same would apply to Apple and its smartphones. Perhaps the FCC can get to the bottom of the story.

  • Any fan of comic books or super heroes like Super Man or Spider Man knows the name Stan Lee. Lee created some of the coolest heroes to ever hit the big screen or TV. I spent many a day as a child watching cartoons of Lee’s creations and live action films.

    stripperellaiphone

Stan Lee has announced a new and exclusive comic for the iPhone called Stripperella. The sultry super heroine stars in an exclusive four-volume comic book series written by Lee and with art by Anthony Winn.

The comic is only available on the App Store. The mild mannered identity of Stripperella is Exotica Jones, an exotic dancer who fights crime at night… or does a striper fight crime during the day. I’m not sure, but if you are a fan of Lee’s work this may be the app for you.

    Appsto.re, iPhone app URL shortener

Despite many other URL shortening services out there, here is another new service on this field: appsto.re. It focuses specifically on iTunes links.

    appstore-screen

Why use appsto.re URL’s? According to them:

    • They contain the name of your app, making people more likely to click.
    • They take people straight to iTunes, increasing the chance people will buy your app.
    • They are short! So they are easy to share on twitter or where ever.

Art magazine Wound is introducing an iPhone version of its summer issue to complement the print and online versions. The iWound app [iTunes link], which costs you $4.99, contains 402 pages of original content, 15 minutes of audio and video and several features.

    iwound-app

The central theme of wound for summer 2009 is ‘la grande illusion’. The new close-up section concentrates on electro musician peaches. This brand new section provides a unique perspective on a different artist every quarter, which gives a personal sense of the individual through concepts and ideas. Curatorial in approach, rather than celebrity-watching, the reader is given a sense of the featured individual, her specific talents, ideas and inspirations.

  • Apple iPhone sales grow 626%

Yeah, the economy is bad. We all know that, you only have to turn on the TV or read anything to know that. Despite the poor economy and tanking computer sales Apple has been able to continue turning impressive profits.

    iphone3g-1

Apple also gets some serious help from its world-beating iPhone. According to Apple’s recently announced financials for fiscal Q3 2009, it increased iPhone sales by a whopping 636%. That has to make Steve Ballmer’s sphincter tone tight enough to rip a plug out of his office chair.

Apple says that it sold 5.2 million iPhones during the quarter. While iPhone sales grew, sales of the iPod were down 7% to 10.2 million. I am betting iPhone sales are hurting the iPod with subsidized iPhone pricing about the same as some iPod models.

Before I was a full time geek, I spent many years working in the health care field. One of the classes I hated the most in college was pharmacology. Learning all the possible interactions to different medications was more than I really wanted to know. I only had to learn a small portion of the drugs, I feel for doctors and pharmacists that need to know most all interactions.

    iphonewebmd

WebMD has announced a new and free application for the iPhone in conjunction with Medscape that is available now on the App Store. The application puts the information doctors need to find drug interactions and more on the iPhone for easy access.

The Medscape mobile app has a database of 6,000 generic and brand name drugs along with supplements and antidotes. A full drug interaction checker is offered for combinations of up to 30 drugs and supplements as well. Other features include CME courses and access to medical news.
