1. Copy & Paste. I can’t believe how many people have slagged the iPhone OS simply because it didn’t support simple clipboard features. Not only does 3.0 support copy and paste functionality, but “Select All” as well. Top THAT!

2. Search. Press the Home button (that circular button at the bottom of your iPhone) on the first Springboard page (the screen with all the app icons) and you’ll be whisked away to the Spotlight search function, where you can look for apps, e-mails, contacts, calendar appointments, notes, etc.

3. App installation limitation has been removed. Previously, you could only have up to 144 apps accessible on your iPhone. This wasn’t a problem for most people, but as someone who is addicted to free apps…this was a long overdue update.

4. Improved photo management. Now, you can email up to 5 images easily from the photo management app. Moreover, you can delete images en masse instead of individually. The live camera app also shows a thumbnail (small image) of the previously-snapped photo, too. The entire experience has been optimized.

5. Find my iPhone. Wow. WOW. If you have a MobileMe account, you can link it to your iPhone – and from the Web, click a button to geolocate your device. You’ll see where it’s at in an embedded Google Map in your Web browser. You can then send a short message directly to your iPhone’s screen, have it emit a sound for two minutes, and even remotely wipe all stored data. This means: FEWER LOST OR STOLEN PHONES. Sorry for using caps here, folks, but I can’t stress enough just how amazing this feature is. It’s a game changer. Remember it the next time you lose your phone (or someone steals it from you).

6. Voice Memos. Using the microphone, you can now record, save, and email audio at a moment’s notice. There’s even this cute little VU meter at the bottom of the screen so you can make sure you’re not going into the red (and yes, I just referred to a screen element as “cute”). The only shortcoming to this new tool is that the audio is saved out in a format that some users may not be able to hear (M4A, as opposed to MP3).

7. Stereo Bluetooth. Time to dust off that wireless headset! The iPhone can now be paired with compatible devices supportive of stereo audio. Fewer cords, FTW! Oh, and that’s an acronym of “For The Win” (which is something all the cool kids are apparently saying these days).

8. MMS, kinda. Everybody in the world can now send and receive rich data via SMS — unless you live in the United States and go through AT&T as a service provider. Yeah, despite having plenty of time to prepare for this update, AT&T is suggesting that multimedia messaging will be available for iPhones “later this summer.” FTL! Oh, and that’s an acronym of “For The Loss” (which is another thing all the cool kids are apparently saying these days).

9. Safari is faster. You know — the iPhone’s Web browser? You now have “autofill” functionality, which will automatically populate fields with data from your own contact information. Plus, Safari will now remember usernames and passwords once they’re filled in, which is more than a major convenience.

10. Emoji is still an option. If you haven’t already done so, go ahead and search for “emoji” in the iTunes App Store. One of those apps will likely enable the feature that’s really only supposed to be available for Japanese users. It’s a series of little graphics that can be seen and used throughout all iPhone apps – including text messages to other iPhones! My favorite emoji-enabling app is “Typing Genius” at 99 cents (if only because you get emoji enabled in addition to having a typing speed challenge app).

With every revision of the operating system, Apple continues to remove objections to the iPhone. Don’t be dissuaded by the price — consider the cost of your current mobile communications device, and how much you can’t do with it.

oleophobic_gone_bad

The iPhone 3GS introduces a number of new features one of which is an oleophobic coating on the touchscreen. Such a membrane repels liquids such as the oil on your fingertips therefore allowing the 3GS screen to remain smudge free. But it seems adding such a coating is not without its problems.

Images like those above have started appearing that show the coating breaking down when the 3GS is used heavily and for repeated tasks e.g. playing the same game over and over again. As you can see, the screen is obstructed by heavy white marking and really needs replacing.

It isn’t known yet whether such a fault will be treated as a manufacturing problem or wear and tear, but hopefully Apple will agree to replace the phones. The same thing cannot happen on the iPhone 3G so why should 3GS users put up with it just for using their phone a lot?

Push Notification 20% Hit on Battery Life?

Back when Apple re-introduced Push Notification at the iPhone 3.0 Sneak Preview Event, Scott Forstall claimed that, unlike background multitasking that could cause an 80% drop in battery life, Push Notification would only cause a 20% drop. While some debated the truth (or truthiness) of his claims, it did set the expectation that users running Push Notification-enabled apps would see lower battery life, and gave an indicator of just how much less.

So, while it too a while, now that we finally have Push Notification, and some of the more popular messengers and games are implemented it, how’s your battery life doing?
Are you seeing a hit compared to your pre-Push Notification days, and if so, is it in the 20% range? Let us know which iPhone you have, how often you’re getting Push Notifications, and how your battery is holding up!

Nokia has lost its overall market share leadership in the worldwide smartphone segment to Apple in mobile ads share, BNET Technology reports. According to statistics from AdMob, Apple’s iPhone received 49 percent of ad traffic in May, compared with 32 percent for Nokia.

Why is mobile ad share important? Because in the smartphone segment, the tail wags the dog — apps drive customer loyalty more than hardware features… Yes, Apple offers many more apps, and yes, it’s more geared to consumers than Nokia.
Nokia already realized about the power of mobile applications and contents. As we know, Ovi Store is Nokia’s answer to the iPhone’s App Store.

3g_iphone_low_batterySome iPhone 3GS buyers were experiencing that their new Apple device has lower battery life, the Los Angeles Times reports, saying it “has trouble making it through a workday without a rest stop at the electrical outlet.”

According to IFixit.com, repairing company which specializes in Apple products, the 3GS’s battery life was about 15% smaller than the original iPhone. But Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison emphasized, battery consumption is highly dependent on what applications and features are used.

A survey of 2300 retail stores reveals that Apple has cleaned up in the smartphone market in Japan, TG Dailyreports. Market research company BCN revealed that the iPhone 3G 8GB is easily heading the list, followed by the 16GB iPhone and the NTT CoCoMo Aquos SH-04A.

iphone-oneseg-tv-app-menu-400x265Is the ranking reliable? “Yes,” Akky Akimoto of Asiajin from Japan answered. “The shops which give their POS (point of sale) data to BCN include some nationwide chain stores, such like Eiden, K’s Denki, Bic Camera, Best Denki and, you may know this company name, Amazon Japan.” The writer also points out us with the ranking’s Japanese page (update: this is another ranking –the weekly ranking).

Released in July last year, Apple’s iPhone 3G has been sold over a million in Japan since then. The survey was conducted before the launch of the iPhone 3GS by Softbank, the country’s third largest wireless carrier

  • Users are reporting that their white iPhones are becoming discolored in the back changing the white plastic to a pinkish hue.

whiteThe reason for this pinkish hue appearing only on white iPhones seems to be a faulty battery giving off an excess amount of heat. However, some speculate that it may be due to processor intensive tasks causing the CPU and/or GPS chipset to overheat. The later seems more probable as Apple had to down clock the iPhone 3GS’ CPU. However, Aaron Vronko of Rapid Repair (who have disassembled the iPhone 3GS) has his own theory on the problem.

“My guess is there’s going to be a whole lot of batteries affected because these are from very large production runs. If you have a problem in the design of a series of batteries, it’s probably going to be spread to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, and maybe more.

  • f you are looking for a Twitter app that offers Push Notification, then look no further than iTwitter. The app was recently updated (now at version 1.1) and has added support for Push Notifications — but it may not be a good setup for everyone.

According to the description within the App Store, the notifications work “between iTwitter users for mentions and DMs.” So, take that and what we have is an app that will almost give us what we want. The app does offer Push Notifications, however they are coming with a catch.

First, the notifications are only for @ mentions and DMs, which means that regular tweets from those that you follow cannot be pushed. So far, that is not all that bad, personally I am not interested in having every tweet pushed to me anyway. That said, the big catch is that for the Push Notifications to work, they have to be coming from a fellow iTwitter user.

Given that, I am not sure I am willing to really consider this as a viable option for Push Notifications. Sure, it looks like a nice app, and it is also available for free, however I do not know anyone else personally who actually uses iTwitter.

Of course, on the flip side, this could be enough to convince some to switch, after all it does have a pretty decent list of features.

    Handle multiple Twitter accounts

View your Twitter timeline, replies, and direct messages

    Manage your favorite tweets

    Browse your following and followers

    Compose new tweets

    Fast Retweet

Reply directly to tweets and send direct messages

    Follow and un-follow people

    Inline TwitPic image viewer

    Upload pictures to TwitPic

    Unparralleled scrolling performance

    Twitlonger supported

    Uses secure connection (https)

    Custom searches

    Nearby searches

    Save your favorite searches

    Landscape keyboard

    Conversational threaded tweets

Given that, I went ahead and installed it on my iPhone. I am not sure it will be able to replace my current favorite (TweetDeck) however it seems to be worthy of a chance.
