Apple iPad and iPhone 3.2 Preview

ipad_hero_20100127

Apple’s new iPad tablet is essentially a larger form-factor iPhone 3GS or iPod touch G3 which leverages both the bigger, 1024×768 screen and an updated iPhone 3.2 OS with enhanced versions of existing apps like Mail and Calendar, new offerings like the iBooks e-book reader and store, low-cost 3G data plans, and a 1GHz Apple A4 processor.

Critics have called the iPad “just a big iPhone” and fail to see how it changes anything. Supporters have called the iPad “a big iPhone” and feel it changes everything. Which is it? Until it ships in March (for the Wi-Fi version) or April (for the 3G version) and TiPb gets to do a full-on review, we can’t say for sure. But we can go through and preview what we’ve seen so far and try to figure out just which direction Apple’s leaning. And we’re going to, after the break!

  • When the holiday season rolls around, people that rarely have a beverage start throwing down the spiked eggnog like it is water. Perhaps this is why the NHS has released the FREE app called Drinks Tracker for your iPhone.

    drinkstracker

Whether we want to admit it or not, we have all been guilty of having a few too many at one time or another and maybe this is exactly what us phone geeks need to make sure we are not getting on the road after a little extra holiday cheer.

Now while the application has the best intentions at heart, it is going to have to be used and listened to in order to be effective. How many people are actually going to take the time to put all of the information in their phone that is needed in order for this app to work? How many will forget about it once they have had a few too many?buy tramadol

The big knock on this program is that the user has a lot of data to enter. For instance, they have to enter the serving size of the drink,

the % of alcohol that it contains and the amount of drinks that they have consumed. It sounds like a great concept and I am sure that many people will start using it with great intentions. However, how many people will merely put the iPhone back in their pocket once the little warning lights start to go off telling them that they are hammered?  side effects of tramadol

In addition to keeping track of your drinks for the night, the app will also continue to monitor your alcohol. At any time, you can pull up the reports and get an analysis of your drinking habits. This is actually a great idea for those of us that consider ourselves to be casual drinkers as we may not be as casual as we think. Not that anyone wants to be nagged, but this is a download that may just be a very good idea to have. It could be a wakeup call for some and may just keep the keys in the pockets of a few people that would otherwise hit the road when they are in no shape to get behind the wheel.where to buy tramadol

  • iPhone Flexed Its Muscle in South Korea

The much anticipated debut of the iPhone in South Korea finally took place on Saturday and it was a huge hit. The actual “opening day” had been delayed on several occasions, but once KT Corp starting taking pre-sale orders, it looked as though the day was finally here. With about 60,000 units flying out of the stores on day one, Apple is once again proving that they have the dominate phone for any market.

    iphone-3gs

When the iPhone first hit China, it met with limited success so the industry guru’s were watching this release pretty intently. With only 5,000 iPhone’s being sold during the entire first week in China, Jobs and the boys at Apple had valid reason for concern. With the big number going in the first day, they are probably sleeping a little better at night knowing that the iPhone can be competitive in this market.blank t-shirts

Oddly enough, smart phones have not been going over very well in that part of the world as they only command about 1% of the market. That is a far cry from the 50% or so market share that they hold in the United States. Up until this point, LG has been one of the more dominant brands and the success of the iPhone on its first day should have them a little concerned.blank t shirt

While the initial response was pretty good, the consistent numbers are going to tell the tale as to whether or not the iPhone will be successful in this market. As contracts are running out and people are deciding to make the move, the question is will they go with the iPhone or the Droid, or will they continue to use the phones that LG and the other popular manufacturers are selling.t shirts wholesale

  • iPhone Gets Its Own Version of DJ Hero

The much anticipated release of the Amidio Touch DJ application has finally been approved by Apple for sale in the App Store and it is sure to be a top seller in no time at all.
touchdjThe app enables users to mix two tracks without ever hearing one second of the song and has some special features that are pretty incredible for being use on a phone.

    Rugs

DJ app’s have apparently been blocked for the iPhone for quite some time and nobody is really sure why. There has been a multitude of applications and every one of them has been turned down to this point. Whether Apple is scared that the applications will hurt their iPod sales or not is unclear as they have been pretty tight lipped about everything so far. However, users have been sending letters and petitions about approval for some type of app and Apple has finally given in.

    Cheap Rugs

The Amidio Touch DJ app will retail for $19.99 in the app store and is pretty amazing. Two separate tracks can be pulled up and compared via the sound waves that

    Area Rugs

are generated. Mixers should be able to combine the tracks by visually matching the waves. At least that is the theory behind the whole thing.

While there is a lot of upside to this app, there are also some small roadblocks that Apple has in mind for its users. For instance, if the user wants to pre listen to the songs before they have been mixed, they must buy a splitting adapter to do so. They also cannot access their current library. Any songs that they want to use in the app must re-imported through another utility on the iPhone.

Even though there are some limitations, there are also a lot of special effects that can be used within the app itself that make this well worth the money. The fact that it is the only true DJ application that is usable on the iPhone doesn’t really give us a choice though if we want to use the iPhone as mixer for our iTunes library. However, Amidio did a great job with the obvious restrictions that Apple put on them to get this approved.

  • Even Pepsi isn’t immune to PR goofups, such as the tasteless and pointless “Amp Up before you score” app they recently released, which struck a sour note for some users.
    ampupbeforeyouscore

That prompted a rather insincere apology from Pepsi, published on Twitter:

Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it’s in bad taste & appreciate your feedback.

In other words: yeah, yeah, if you don’t like it, don’t download it, more or less.

The app itself: pickup lines that are supposed

to work on various types of women. Yep, that’s the whole purpose of the app, and it ignores the rather obvious tip of “don’t glance at your iPhone constantly while trying to pick up women”.

It isn’t that we’re so sensitive, its just curious that a large company like Pepsi would green light a silly, borderline sexist and absurd app like this one with its name on it. We’ll be interested in the uproar increases if it issues an actual apology, not a half-hearted text message that sounds like a 13 year old wrote it.

  • It’s hard to believe, but the App Store has recorded over 2 billion downloads as of today. It’s amazing to think about…
    app_store

The release claims 50 million+ iPhone users, and 85,000+ apps are currently available on the platform, which is pretty mind-boggling in and of itself.

To commemorate the occasion, Apple issued this press release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/09/28appstore.html

    CEO Steve Jobs:

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone. The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

Truer words never spoken, and the numbers prove it.

  • A new patent application filed this week by Apple suggests the iPhone maker is looking to use the device’s accelerometer to detect possible theft of the hardware.
antitheftIn a application entitled “Acceleration-Based Theft Detection System for Portable Electronic Devices,” Apple describes a system that would analyze movement via a device’s accelerometer to determine whether a theft is present. If the system were to interpret fast movement as a theft, it would initiate an alarm.

“The drive toward miniaturization of electronics has resulted in computer-based systems that are becoming much more portable,” the application reads. “Current portable electronic devices such as laptop computers, hand-held devices such as cellular telephones and personal media devices, such as the iPod from Apple Computer, Inc., and even devices such as compact disc players, are sufficiently compact and lightweight as to make them easily movable. Unfortunately, such ease of transport also implies ease of theft. While the rightful owner of a portable electronic

device may conveniently transport it almost anywhere, so can a thief. ”

It goes on to say that traditional theft-prevention methods like mechanical locks are bulky and tether the device, eliminating portability and convenience. In the proposed system, the accelerometer would be used to determine whether the device is currently in a likely theft condition.

“Typically, theft or other large-scale movement of the device results in an acceleration signal having characteristics different from other events such as shock, impact, nearby machinery, etc,” the application reads. “The detected acceleration as a function of time is thus analyzed to determine whether it corresponds to such large-scale movement of the device, rather than an innocuous event such as the impact of a book dropped nearby. If so, an alarm is produced in order to alert others to the theft.”

The patent was filed by Apple on May 20, 2009 and is credited to Paul J. Wehrenberg of Palo Alto, Calif.
